At times of crisis it is often the case that opponents put their differences aside and work together for the common good. It is the sign of maturity when you can recognise that no one person or party has a monopoly on good ideas or sound judgements.

Good government, whether it is Conservative, Labour or Liberal Democrat, needs a sound and effective opposition to challenge preconceptions and improve the laws and policies that may not have been properly thought through. The one consolation I took from the changes to the constitution that the Conservatives passed since 2006 (which included limiting questions, motions and speaking rights) was that cabinet decisions would be scrutinised by a committee led by the leader of the main opposition party.

It became apparent early on what the true colours of the Councils new leadership was when strict instructions were issued to ignore any recommendations over the change in Councils logo. At the last Cabinet meeting matters finally came to head when the Leader of the Council decided to ride roughshod over decent people trying to do the job they are paid for and a job the borough needs to be done. Their crime was that they wanted to examine a decision to cut thousands from the budget for Democratic Services.

At times like these Hillingdon's administration should actively value all councillors contributions and not seek to insult and sideline for petty political point scoring. We need work together to improve Hillingdon's future and stand united to protect our inheritance.
